Organised by health-care company Ezyhealth, the event - Ezyhealth City Skate 2009 - will kick off at midnight and end at 4am. It is expected to attract about 4,000 skaters.
The cost of organising such an event - almost $500,000, including the rental of 2,000 water-filled barriers and the hiring of 100 road marshals.
'We want to drum up awareness of the importance of staying healthy and feel that such an event would make an impact,' said a spokesman for Ezyhealth, a company that publishes two health-care magazines and provides medical services for corporations here. 'Night skating seems the most exciting. We want to bring this culture, that exists in other cities like Paris, to Singapore.'
Skaters will start off in front of Ngee Ann City, pass The Heeren and the Istana, before making a turn at Penang Lane. On the home stretch, participants will go past the Regency House and Orchard Cineleisure before reaching the endpoint back at Ngee Ann City.
The competition will have both a leisure and competitive section.
This event fits into the Singapore Tourism Board's (STB) vision for Orchard Road to be a dynamic, vibrant and vital urban centre, said its director of tourism shopping and dining, Mr Andrew Phua. 'STB welcomes more of such street-level events to add vibrancy to Orchard Road.'
The chairman of the Orchard Road Business Association, Ms May Sng, said that with the Marina Bay area being developed, it was important for Orchard Road to remain vibrant and competitive.
Already, skaters such as Mr David Ng, 63, have signed up. 'I have skated so many routes in Singapore and I know every trail and every bush. It is becoming boring,' he said. 'But on Orchard Road, on the actual tarmac with no cars around? That will be different.'
